I started to learn to drive in January 2014 – I had been living overseas for many year and knew it was something I wanted to do as soon as I got home.
I decided to approach Gary in March 2016 – I had just over 2 years of lessons (one lesson every week) 2 instructors and 8 tests behind me. Yep, I know most of all the examiners by name and the whole test process very well ☺
As much as I failed my test many tests, I still really wanted to drive.
I decided that I would find an instructor based on reviews – most of my friends and family can drive so it wasn’t easy to get recommendations. That’s when I came across Gary, I seen great reviews on google, his website and yell. Some clients had commented that they had also failed a few times which really reassured me. I didn’t plan on driving an automatic, I didn’t have a lot of issue with the gears, and it was never mentioned to me by either of my passed instructors but due to Gary only having space for me with an automatic, I gave it ago.
I genuinely never started to ‘learn’ how to drive until Gary started to teach me. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have the correct instructor, I always thought that you’d only ever have one instructor and that I was so stupid that I still couldn’t pass my test. One thing that Gary done that no one ever did, was he taught me to not just be OK at driving, or let’s ‘hope’ I’ll pass the test. He makes sure you are ready and that you will pass.
As most of you can imagine, I didn’t have a lot of confidence, especially when you’ve failed so much at something, that was knocked out of my slowly with Gary. If you work with him, then you’ll be an excellent driver with the confidence you need to smash the test.
He questions mostly everything you do, and asks a lot of questions – this is needed, and you don’t want someone to just tell you how it’s done. You need to be questions and challenged when learning how to drive. If not, it’ll be an expensive, long process and many failed tests.
I sat my first test with Gary in October 2016 – I failed this test with a major and a few minors. I felt upset (obviously) but it was by far the best test I had sat. Not in regards to minors or majors but just how much I controlled and drove the car. I then put in for another test for the next month November 2016 and I passed with only 1 minor.
I definitely would not have passed my test if I never found Gary. I would recommend him to anyone, he is worth every penny and more. Don’t be scared if you need to change instructors.
My advice – go with Gary, listen to him, learn from him, and use his website. Work with him and don’t rush the process.
Lastly from me…. enjoy it, you’ll only learn once and you want the experience to be a good one!
I went to Gary with no confidence in my driving at all. He was really good at pushing me to try things that I didn’t think I was ready for when I actually was! Learning to drive was a slow process for me, let’s just say that it’s not a natural talent of mine.. Although you wouldn’t know that if you saw me now, even if I do say so myself! However, despite a few occasions where I made us both fear for our lives or scuffed his expensive alloys, he was never impatient and after a while we both felt that I was ready to sit my test. Now, taking the test was a whole other hurdle in itself. I’ve never been so nervous in my life!! I felt parts of my body shaking that I didn’t even know COULD shake, like my butt cheeks!! After that first one I decided that I didn’t need a driving licence after all and that I was happy taking buses.. but Gary convinced me to try again. And again. And again.. And again! I took seven tests in total and after each one Gary would take the time to calm me down and even researched techniques for dealing with nerves. He really is an instructor who genuinely cares about his students! Eventually, our persistence paid off and now it’s been almost a year since I passed my test. Life is so much better and I have so much more freedom! I will forever be so thankful to Gary for being the best driving instructor in town!
When I begun my driving lessons with Gary I was absolutely terrified of driving! I never ever wanted to drive but had been convinced by family and friends that Gary could help me driving in his automatic car. This was probably the best decision I ever made!
I still remember my first lesson learning to simply move off and stop the car which seemed so difficult at the time! And now I don’t even think about it! Learning in an automatic is an excellent idea for those like me who feel a little less confident on the road! Along with Gary’s funny and patient nature I felt confident on the roads in no time! I love how Gary would always break down any problems or worried I had to resolve them straight away!
On approach to my test I did a mock test with Gary. Feeling confident and ready for my test I thought this was a fab idea! But I’m not afraid to say I totally failed it! But this allowed me to see the kind of environment you are in during your test and it showed you how you can forgot the simple things when you feel nervous! Despite failing the mock test it helped me so much that I even managed to pass my actual test first time! I was delighted!!
I want to say a massive thank you to Gary for teaching me one of the most important and essential skills in life. He made learning fun with all of his banter and I really enjoyed going on lessons with him!!
As a final note my advice for you is to relax and enjoy your lessons, don’t stress too much about the other people around you! It’s ok to be nervous everyone else is too!!
